Courchevel

Courchevel is part of ‘The Three Valleys, ‘ boasting a massive 600km of ski slopes. It’s famous for having the best-groomed slopes in the Alps, ensuring you enjoy perfectly maintained pistes every day.

The “1942 Mission” carefully studied various factors like slopes, snow cover, sunshine, wind, access, and avalanche risks. The recommendation was to develop the “Three Valleys” site, including Saint-Bon, Les Allues, and Bellevilles.

In a German camp the same year, Laurent Chappis, a young Savoyard architect and town planner, and Maurice Michaud, an engineer, worked on a plan for ski lifts and accommodations across the area. The name “Courchevel” originates from the local term “ecortzevé” in Saint-Bon dialect, meaning “skinned.” It refers to a place at 1500m where young shepherds kept watch over calves tempted by the springtime growth of grass, harmful to their tongues. Despite considering “Tovets,” the resort was ultimately named Courchevel.

Today, Courchevel is a playground for the wealthy, renowned as the most glamorous destination with “palaces” and top-notch five-star hotels. It boasts an unparalleled concentration of luxury hotels and Michelin stars.
